Ephemeral Efforts

Reversing the spell

Concept and direction by:

Robert Kaplan and John D. Mitchell

Performance by David Barker and Douglas Nielsen at Arizona State University, Drama city, March 1991

A new Performance work, Reversing the Spell, was adapted by Department of Dance faculty composers Robert Kaplan and John D. Mitchell from a poem by Eleanor Wilnor.

Taking the Bible as an historical document, Kaplan and Mitchell sought to re-examine myths that have been central to the development of the western culture and present them in acontemporary setting.

The work was the first performance at Arizona state University to take advantage of a then new software tool,MAX, now know as MAX/MSP.

The interdisciplinary, interactive performance work combined theater, dance, music, visual arts, poetry, and computer science – drawing on the creative output of faculty from the college of fine arts, the college of Architecture and design, and a visiting artist in Dance.
