In In 2004 Memory Traces was created as a collaboration between John D. Mitchell, Sean Nevin, and Jennifer Tsukayama. It was presented by the Department of Dance in the Dance Studio Theater at Arizona State University as part of a concert of diverse dance works. Memory Traces used real-time capture and playback of video as a metaphor for memory and the transformation of experience from one moment in time to the next. The metaphor was extended to include the way memories are transformed by time and in some cases mental illness.
